Piano Types
The Grand Piano is measured from the front of the keyboard to the back of the lid. Despite the various sizes, all grands look similar and operate in approximately the same manner.
Baby Grand
Shorter than 5'8" (173cm)
Grand
Between 5'8" and 8'10" (173-269cm)
Concert Grand
Longer than 8'10" (269 cm)
The Upright Piano is measured from the floor to the top of the lid. Despite having similar workings, uprights can be divided into three distinct subheadings: upright, console, and spinet.
Upright
Taller than 51" (129.5cm)
Console or Studio
Between 38" and 51" (96.5-129.5cm)
Spinet
Shorter than 38" (96.5cm)
The Square Grand Piano (pictured below) has a rectangular shape and is the precursor to the modern grand piano. They come in a variety of sizes and varying degrees of ornament. However, squares are much simpler in design and are musically inferior to modern pianos. Tegtmeier Piano Tuning does not tune square grands or "bird-cage" uprights.
